To address these challenges there has been growing interest in the use of <!--more-->complex and innovative trial designs, which allow for borrowing of information from external data sources to supplement limited trial sample sizes<sup><a href=\"#Notes\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup> or reduce control group allocation in a hybrid-controlled trial<sup><a href=\"#Notes\" rel=\"noopener\">2 <\/a><\/sup>\u2014 often through the use of <a href=\"\/blog\/bayesian-strategies-in-rare-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bayesian methods<\/a>. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided guidance on considerations for the appropriate use of Bayesian borrowing, including the importance of selecting a suitable external data source and evaluating the the type-I and type-II error operating characteristics under the proposed <a href=\"\/blog\/bayesian-methods-for-historical-borrowing-conjugate-priors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">borrowing approach<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"#Notes\" rel=\"noopener\">3,4,5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Bayesian borrowing methods such as the use of power priors<sup><a href=\"#Notes\" rel=\"noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup> or robust meta-analytic predictive priors (robust MAP)<sup><a href=\"#Notes\" rel=\"noopener\">7<\/a><\/sup> provide methods for partial information borrowing from external data sources to augment a concurrent control arm or pediatric trial using trial data in adult populations.
